When a life-changing snowboarding injury alters her world in 2020 at Lee Canyon near Las Vegas, adaptive athlete Shelby Estacada draws on the support of fellow athletes and the mountain community to reclaim the slopes and exceed her former limits. After spending eight days in the ICU following a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down, Shelby faced the challenge of learning an entirely new way of life - including mastering the mono-ski. "There's good days and tough days, never any bad days," she reflects on her journey back to the mountains. With guidance from organizations like the High Fives Foundation and mentorship from fellow adaptive athletes, Shelby discovered that her new reality could surpass her wildest dreams. Now skiing advanced terrain, she describes the feeling: "That wind in my face and just an open, groomed run... I'm free to do whatever I want, go wherever I want." Today, Shelby has moved back to Vegas where she's building the adaptive program at the very mountain where her accident occurred, turning her story of resilience into inspiration for others.
