2019. Spring flooding in Mississippi hits record highs. In Louisiana, the residents of Pierre-Part prepare for the worst. Local authorities may soon be forced to open the floodgates of the Morganza Spillway to save New-Orleans and Baton-Rouge from further uncontrolled flooding. Faith and resilience are the two best weapons they still have in the face of uncertainty.

Into the Ice | An Expedition to the End of the World
“Into the Ice” is a journey into Cordillera Darwin – a remote, wild and mostly unexplored mountain range at the tip of South America. In spring of 2022, seven friends sailed, climbed and explored this pristine place to better understand how its mountain glaciers are responding to climate change. Along the way, they attempt the first ascent of Roncagli and Cerro Sara.

Inspired by a historical Hopi event and seen through young Tiyo’s journey, the film shows how climate change is impacting all who live along the river. Joy is a ranger, wildlife conservationist and mother who dedicates her days to protecting the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the extreme south-west of Uganda . She feels like a mother to both her human and wild family, whom she protects and defends with respect and admiration from a mostly male team of rangers.

Inseparable: Myia
As one of only 30 fluent Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language speakers left in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), @welwaltenaat teaches as a way to preserve her language for generations to come. Seeking to learn more about her culture and language, Myia uses her mountain bike as a needle weaving through her ancestral lands and language. While biking with other Indigenous women, Myia utilizes the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh language to point out geographical features and native plants on rides. Weaving complex conversations through nuanced layers of generational trauma, Inseparable ultimately paints Indigenous joy and community as vital elements for a path forward.

The film peeks into the lives of two young farmers in their second year of operation in Boulder County, Colorado. This young couple is one example of many entering the aging farming profession. We learn about Danny and Annaliese's backstory: how and why they changed from being vegetarians to livestock farmers and why they use regenerative farming techniques.

This adventure documentary follows a blue-collar crew of Appalachian adventure seekers deep into the mountains as they climb, talk shit, fish for their dinner, and try to use their single-pitch skills to summit a 1,300ft rock face. Their main objective is to free an old aid route first established over 30 years ago, but will they succeed? Will they be strong enough? Will they be struck by lightning? One thing is for sure, they've been infected with "the illness!"

In far Northern Arizona on the Navajo Nation lies an archaeologically rich canyon, called Tsegi. Navajo ranching families who live here recognized the warning signs of biodiversity loss and degradation, and armed with new knowledge and the desire to heal the land they decided to launch a pilot project in 2018 to see what could be done. Starting with 1,000 acres, and now to over 5000 acres, the livestock was temporarily removed and native plants planted in strategic locations to bring the watershed back to ecological health. The willows, cottonwoods, and wetland grasses have returned, and with them the sounds and signs of migrating birds, frogs, and native wildlife that symbolize a healthy ecosystem. This film quietly reveals the story of restoration of Tsegi Canyon, and inspires a movement to bring the medicine back to the landscape before it's too late

Who’s Who of FMFF - Meet Ember Crowley, Executive Assistant! ✨

Ember Crowley has earned her BS in Creative Film and Media with her emphasis in Directing in Independent Filmmaking from Northern Arizona University. She is currently in her second year of her Master’s degree for Documentary Studies. She has spoken at several film festivals in Ireland, France and the U.S. about her experiences as a female director and was invited to share on a local podcast, The Theater Basement. She is an advocate for equal opportunities in the film industry, which is why she loves being a part of the film festival and the message it represents.

Who’s Who of FMFF - Meet Ed Moss! ✨

Ed started with the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival as a volunteer before joining the board of directors. He settled in Flagstaff after leaving the east coast, searching for bigger canyons, mountains, and rivers (after stints in Alaska, Wyoming, and Utah). Ed now has a similar range as a California condor here in the American Southwest; Grand Canyon to Zion and everywhere in between. When he’s not working as a fish technician in Grand Canyon, he works as a photographer across the Colorado Plateau. He focuses on biodiversity loss, climate change, wildfires, water, and environmental justice. Ed is working on his first film, which dives into the history of uranium mining and the dangers that legacy presents around the greater Bears Ears landscape.

Who’s Who of FMFF - Meet Colleen Cooley, Indigenous Program Director! ✨

Colleen is Diné and a desert girl at heart. She grew up wandering the mesas, washes, and sandstones in Shonto, Arizona, located on the Navajo Nation. Her curious mind and innate connection to the lands and waters led her to earning a Master’s Degree in Climate Science & Solutions from Northern Arizona University in 2012. Colleen has been engaged in the Flagstaff community for the last 20 years. In 2020, she made the decision to become involved with the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival to invite and include more Indigenous films, filmmakers, voices, and perspectives. In the same year, she co-directed and was featured in a short documentary film “Water Flows Together” in which she shares her perspective on the importance of Indigenous land acknowledgement and understanding where our water comes from.

Festival aside, Colleen is also a facilitator, trail runner, raft guide & advocate on the San Juan and Green River, an educator, and amateur photographer.

Who’s Who of FMFF - Meet Steph McCarthy, Graphic & Website Promotions! ✨

Steph has been involved with this incredible project since 2004. Coincidentally, her friends Geoff & Anne needed help promoting this event to the Flagstaff community. And so started the film festival love affair. Her expertise and contributions to the festival have been behind the scenes, creating contemporary event posters and various promotional materials. A midwestern girl at heart, headed west to further explore the country and beyond. Steph gets a kick out of riding her pedal and moto bikes. Her passion for bicycles parlayed into a prolific volunteer journey with Flagstaff Biking Organization. You can find her outside riding bikes or working in her garden.

Who’s Who of FMFF - Meet Laura Kish Franke, VR Program Developer! ✨

Laura Kish Franke, a local artist and community organizer enjoys having one foot in the natural world and one digital foot in virtual reality. You can find her outdoors enjoying northern Arizona’s landscapes via paddle boarding, hiking, cross country skiing and easily diving into immersive storytelling of virtual reality films and experiences. She has had first hand experience of the impactful VR program “Getting Real” at FMFF debuting in 2020 and is excited that more planning is afoot, knowing how this filmmaking moves the audience through empathy and immersive storytelling. The Awe effect awaits.
