Emerging Filmmaker Program
Mission Statement
Our primary goal is to provide a free, alternate extra curricular activity and hands-on workshop that students can use to discover and fulfill their passion or hidden talent for media production.
Objective
We want to create a workshop that focuses on teaching the essentials of video production and editing to incite students with the artistic power of filmmaking. By dispersing this knowledge among youth, they are provided with an opportunity to explore their creative energy in an artistic medium that is not commonly offered in public schools.
Workshop Curriculum
Students will learn how to produce a non-fiction film from idea and concept development all the way through to marketing it into film festivals, primarily the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival. The class will meet once a week and discuss the basics of pre-production phases, equipment use and production efficacy, and post-production program skills.
The FMFF Emerging Filmmaker Program was initiated in 2009 to provide an alternative extra curricular activity and learning workshop for students that would enable them to discover and fulfill their passion or hidden talent for media production. The Program was offered at no cost to participants and focused on teaching the essentials of video production and editing to introduce students to the artistic power of filmmaking. The 2009 Program was a great success with the production of two films under the guidance of Program Director and local filmmaker Denise M. Stilley. In 2010 we decided to direct the film production towards the type of educational films we are tying to promote and therefore we stipulated that the film content needed to be in the Environmental genre. Under Ms. Stilley’s supervision the students responded and delivered a fantastic film about the recycling issues in Flagstaff. We are delighted to be screening the film “Green Waste” during the “Environmental Focus” Session on Thursday between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
In the current economic climate there is little resource available for the advancement of the arts within the trimmed down district budgets. A program that is capable of providing an opportunity for students to explore their creative energy in an artistic medium that is not commonly offered in public schools is more necessary now than ever before. We are therefore proud to announce that the program will continue and that we are devoting even more resources to guarantee its success. The curriculum includes how to produce a film from budgeting and concept development through marketing it into the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival as well as other documentary film festivals. As a volunteer nonprofit organization we can use all the help we can get to ensure the program’s continued success, so if you are looking for a fun and unique volunteer experience please join us!
